At the outbreak of the war he joined Col Sidney Stokes' company as a private and served during the war.

He was appointed commissary and later corporal. In the Seven Days Fight around Richmond he was wounded and was allowed to come home on furlough.

During his absence from the army he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the 53rd Regiment, which position he assumed on his return to the army. He was wounded at the Battle of Winchester and a number of other times but not seriously.

Commissioned 2nd Lieut Co.K on 8/2/1862. Hospitalized at Richmond,Va. on 7/29/1863. Furloughed on 8/3/1863. Returned 9/30/1863. Wounded 9/19/1864 at Winchester,Va. Returned 1/30/1865 and Commissioned Lieut Col of the Regiment. He resigned his Commission on 4/1/1865. Died Aug 1912, Wilkes Co, NC.

Hospitalized at Fort Monroe, Va., April 13, 1865 and died there May 24, 1865, of “exhaustion.” [Note: Buried at Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, VA in plot #2175]

Daniel was my great great 1st cousin who volunteered 04/30/1862. He fought at Gettysberg, then, on 08/20/1863, deserted the unit only to be arrested and detained. By 09/1863 he was back with the regiment and wounded, later to be captured at Fisher's Hill, Va. He was sent to Pt. Lookout, Md and died of 'consumption' (TB) 02/06/1865.

1842 – 1910. He was conscripted at age 19, October 7, 1862. Sent to hospital at Goldsboro on February 4, 1863. He was admitted to the General Military Hospital No 4 Wilmington NC on Jun 7, 1863 for Debility and returned to duty on Jun 8, 1863. He was reported absent without leave from July 8 through December 31, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Detailed for duty in the hospital at Richmond, Virginia, February 6, 1864. On Feb 29, 1864 assigned to guard duty at Jackson Hospital Richmond. He rejoined his company in November or December, 1864. Detailed for hospital duty at Richmond, Virginia again on January 31, 1865. Hospitalized at Richmond on February 4, 1865 with ascites. Furloughed for sixty days on March 16, 1865.

He may have been station at the North Carolina Hospital set up by Governor Vance in Richmond VA. Vance purchased the site of a Tobacco factory to setup the North Carolina Troops Hospital which was located on South Main and 26th Street one block from the Confederate Navy Yard and below to the left of the main Chimborazo hospital. The hospital was originally named Moore hospital after Surgeon General S. P. Moore. It was later renamed to General Hospital No. 24. It was three stories high with a large basement and could house around 70 to 80 patients. The hospital was run by Dr. Otis F. Manson and his two assistants, Dr. Sherwood and Dr. Hussey all from North Carolina.

Reported present on surviving company muster rolls through Aug 1864. Appointed Musician in Sept/Oct 1864 and played the drums and fife. Reported present through Feb 1865. Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse VA April 9, 1865. Per NC pension records he was wounded at Battle of Gettysburg and Mine Run on unspecified dates. I have a photo of him in his later years wearing the medal given to him by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

He was taken to a hospital in DC and then shipped off to Elmira Prison camp in New York. He remained there until after the war and returned home after his release

Joseph was born in Union Co NC 29 Jan 1838. He was 24 when he enlisted in aforesaid county in Co I 53 Regiment NC Infantry on 20 March 1862 and was mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh, NC on 30 April 1862. He has 24 cards in his archival file, however most are very faded. He was a farmer and was 5 foot 8 inches tall. He was appointed as the Regimental mail carrier on 23 May 1862. He is slightly wounded at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863. He is seriously wounded near Bethesda Church at the battle of Cold Harbor on last day of battle 3 June 1964. He lost his right arm below the elbow and as a result was disabled and discharged. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed. Thetus H Griffin. He died 16 Aug 1920 and is buried at William Griffin Cem. Monroe, Union Co. NC where was a preacher. May God rest his soul.

John was born in 1829 in Union Co NC. He has 19 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 30 Jan 1863 by Lt. Cuthbertson. His Company CO was Capt. E A. Jerome. He served honorably until his capture at Pottsville, Md. on 25 July 1864. Sent to the Old Capitol Prison in DC where he died of Dysentery on 7 Aug 1864. His body was buried in a mass grave at the prison. On 17 Oct 1883 this grave was moved to the Arlington National Cem. In DC. It was moved again to the Oakwood Cem. in Raleigh, Wake County NC. John was engaged at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Mine Run, Bristo Station, Spotsylvania, and North Anna. His regimental history reads as follows. Assigned to General's Daniel's & Grimes Brigade. On 18 July 1864 engaged in battle at Snickers Ford, 19 - 20 July moved toward Stansbury Va. in support of Ramseur's Division, 21 July retired to Fishers Hill. John was the husband of my distant cousin, after John died, she married again.

His Regiment is assigned to General Daniels & Grimes Brigade. 1 May 1864 he is transferred to the Band and promoted to Full Musician. He is described as a Farmer.
